Find me on:

Being a vegetarian in the city is way easier than most places. There’s a wide variety of food, and you’re guaranteed to know like 1,000 other people that are vegetarians too. So, naturally, there’s a decent market for it. Plus, you have all those people that just like eating vegetarian because it’s fun and makes them look cool (aka me).

I’ll be the first to admit that I have high standards for vegetarian friendly restaurants. Pasta doesn’t count. Vegetarians are always forced to go to restaurants they don’t want to go to just because their friends think that having pizza, pasta, and a few non-meat salads on the menu make them great vegetarian options. Trust me, we eat enough of that at home because we are too lazy to make legitimate meals for ourselves. When we go out, we want to be wined and dined: vegetables we’ve never even heard of over a bed of greens or grains that we can’t spell.

Using my professional opinion and exquisite taste, I’ve picked my top three restaurants (in no particular order) that truly represent the idea of being vegetarian-friendly. I’ve also included an honorary mention to make sure this was a truly fair competition.

1. Natural Gourmet Institute

Even though you can’t go to NGI any day of the week, this had to make my list. A 3-course vegetarian meal (that doesn’t include salad as a course) is a vegetarian’s fantasy. For $45 a person, you can make a Friday night reservation and enjoy an abundance of local veggies cooked by Chef’s in training. And if you’re looking for a little extra fun, NGI proudly supports a BYOB atmosphere.

2. Horchata

Mexican food can be a total hit or miss. I’ve been to restaurants that just have black bean tacos and cheese quesadillas. Personally, that does not satisfy me. Horchata exceeds expectations with menu items like brussels sprout tacos and cremini mushroom quesadillas. They also have cheese enchiladas, a bunch of meatless sides to curb your hunger, and 4, yes 4, different kinds of guacamole. Horchata hits the vegetarian Mexican mark. Definitely Gabrielle approved.

3. Kurry Qulture

I’m a huge fan of all things Indian cuisine, and Kurry Qulture’s vegetarian friendly menu is exactly why. Adding this restaurant to our list of venues is a total home-run for our vegetarian users. This menu gives you options. You won’t be forced toward one menu item because you have 6 vegetarian choices and countless appetizers and sides. To top it off, they have weekend brunch with an Indian spin. You can never go wrong with brunch. Isn't that like a NY trademark or something?

4. Honorable Mention: Wine

No, this is not the name of a restaurant. But, when all else fails and your friends can’t seem to understand why you don’t want to go to that new spot with grass-fed beef, push them towards a wine bar and eat your weight in cheese. You can never eat too much cheese. Unless of course you are lactose intolerant…then I am sure there is a limit on cheese.

Well, there ya have it, folks. A few of my top choices for our vegetarian users and people looking to expand their palate. Check out these venues on our site for your next vegetarian outing!
